John Edwards Uses $900,000 in Campaign Money to Hide Mistress

A federal grand jury on Friday indicted two-time Democratic presidential candidate and former North Carolina Senator John Edwards. He is charged with four counts of illegal campaign contributions, one count of conspiracy and one count of false statements.

warrant was issued for his arrest, and he is expected to appear in federal court in Winston-Salem at 2:30 p.m. Friday and plead not guilty.

The indictment follows a high-profile investigation that lasted more than two years into whether Edwards’ 2008 campaign used more than $900,000 in campaign contributions to cover up his affair with staffer Rielle Hunter and the pregnancy and birth of their daughter, Quinn. Edwards, 58, hasn’t publicly discussed the investigation since releasing a statement through his attorney in 2009 in which he said he was confident no funds from his campaign were used improperly.
